Earliest proven Bullert ancestor. His marriage record spelled the surname as "Bullert". Early parish records alternate between "Buller" and "Bullert" — one theory is that the Polish parish priest wrote the German name phonetically. The name "Buller" meant a writer of documents. Marianne had a son before marrying Daniel: Petro Martin, baptized April 1752.

Buller or Bullert? Meller or Muller?
Buller or Bullert?
Debate has focused on whether our original surname spelling was BULLER or BULLERT. Without a birth record for our earliest known ancestor, Daniel BULLER, born circa 1726, we can only rely on available parish church records. Both spellings appear interchangeably. The earliest records from the mid-1700s are in Latin, and reflect old Polish grammar by the suffixes that identify gender and marital status. Since the name was written into the record by the parish priest as it sounded, perhaps the spelling depended upon whether the priest was Polish or German. If the name was spoken by a German, it sounded like "BULLER" (boo-lah). If spoken in Polish, it sounded more like "BULLARD" or "BULLERT". Note that the Polish pronunciation trills the final "r" which sounds very much like "rd" or "rt". We may never know why there were two spellings, but both appear in early records.
Notably, Daniel BULLERT (with a "t") appears in his marriage record of Nov. 9, 1752.
Meller or Muller?
| Name | German | Polish |
|---|---|---|
| MELLEROWN | (mee-lar-owna) | (mee-lar-ovna) |
| MELLER | (meh-lar) | (mee-lar) |
| MULLER | (moo-lar) | (moo-lud) |
| MILLER | sounds similar to MULLER |
The spelling of Mariannam MELLEROWNA indicates Old Polish grammar: the ending "am" (feminine) of Mariannam and ending "owna" of MELLEROWNA (unmarried woman) inferring surname MELLER. The spelling of a marriage witness was Petro (Peter) MELLER. Uncertainty exists about whether Marianne's last name was actually Muller, rather than Meller.
Spoken in German, MELLEROWNA sounds like mee-lar-owna. In Polish, it sounds like mee-lar-ovna. In Polish, the surnames Miller (mee-lar) and Meller (meh-lar) sound very different.
Two grandchildren (born to their son Erdmann BULLER and first wife Charlotte HOGE) had godparents whose surname was entered in parish birth/baptism records as Muller: Eva Rosina BULLER, b. 1797 — Godparent Daniel MULLER; Louise BULLER, b. 1805 — Godparent Peter MULLER.
Adding more confusion to the question of Marianne's surname, another grandchild born to Erdmann had a godparent whose surname was entered in the parish record as "MILLEROWNA". The likelihood is that this was surname Meller because they sound very similar in German (mee-lah-owna) and Polish (mee-lar-ovna). The surname MULLER, on the other hand, is more distinct in German (moo-lah) and Polish (moo-lerd).
We do not know whether Daniel Buller spoke both German and Polish. The likelihood is that he spoke German, but also understood some Polish.
